Valerie J. Shinbaum, MS, LPC, MAC, NCC

Valerie J. Shinbaum is a practicing psychotherapist since 1992. She graduated from Villanova University with a Master of Science in Counseling and Human Relations, and is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Master Addictions Counselor and a National Certified Counselor.

Ms. Shinbaum is the Organizer for the Meetup group Mental Health Professionals In Private Practice, providing continuing professional development hours with monthly clinical presentations. She is a member of the American Counseling Association, the American Mental Health Counselors Association, the Colorado Counseling Association, the Colorado Association of Addiction Professionals, and NAADAC - the Association for Addiction Professionals.

Ms. Shinbaum serves as a facilitator/trainer, keynote speaker and presenter for group workshops and continuing education conferences at the local and national level. She presented at American Institute of Medical Education’s Creativity and Madness conference (www.aimed.com) in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Hawaii. Along with John Bradshaw, William Glasser and others, she presented for the Ben Franklin Institute Summit for Clinical Excellence (www.bfisummit.com). She presented for Health-Ed LLC (www.health-ed.com), and for the Colorado Society of Clinical Specialists in Psychiatric Nursing.

As a presenter in the Denver Metro area, Ms Shinbaum was a featured speaker for the Sierra Tucson Lunch and Learn program, the CeDAR Treatment Facility Lunch and Learn program, Highlands Behavioral Health Fall Speaker program, The Harmony Foundation Lunch and Learn program, the Colorado Counseling Association Annual State Conference, the Colorado Group Psychotherapy Society Annual State Conference, and Sandstone Care Continuing Professional Development Speaker program. She presented for the Cedar Springs Hospital Lunch and Learn Speaker series, and at the Psychotherapy Associates Annual Winter Symposium, both in Colorado Springs.

Ms. Shinbaum keeps her life in balance away from work by pursuing as many of her lifelong passions as possible. They include fitness, music, films, cooking, and travel, among others. She taught aerobics and was a personal fitness trainer for 16 years, was a ride leader for a bicycle club and participated in distance bicycle rides as well as cycling trips both in the US and Europe. Ms Shinbaum is an avid skier, golfer and hiker, and also enjoys dancing, swimming and practicing yoga. Ms. Shinbaum attends to the balance in her life on a daily basis, and believes in making the time for work, creativity, movement, proper nutrition, adequate rest, leisure pursuits and downtime.

Ms. Shinbaum knows the positive rewards resulting from an ongoing commitment to the mental, emotional and physical aspects of maintaining a balanced life. Among her favorite quotes is this one: “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.” And she adds, “I’m learning, growing and striving for balance every step of the way!”
